Switzerland is a destination that captivates travelers with its breathtaking landscapes, charming towns, and rich culture. For a group of 14 adventurers, this journey was more than just sightseeing—it was a unique experience filled with personal connections, local insights, and, of course, guided by deaf professionals who made the trip extra special. Here’s a glimpse into their unforgettable time exploring Switzerland’s hidden gems.

A Warm Welcome in Schaffhausen

Our Swiss adventure kicked off in the picturesque town of Schaffhausen, where we were warmly greeted by Roli and Patty, a lovely couple with deep roots in the local deaf community. Roli, the former president of the Swiss Federation of the Deaf, shared fascinating insights about the country’s culture and history. Instead of rushing through highways, we opted for scenic countryside roads, discovering quaint villages and beautiful landscapes along the way.

The Cheese Museum in Appenzell & A Stop in Liechtenstein

One of the early highlights of our trip was the visit to the Cheese Museum in Appenzell. Here, we learned all about the traditional art of Swiss cheese-making—a deliciously fun and educational experience! From there, our journey continued with a brief but memorable stop in Liechtenstein, the 6th smallest country in the world. We even got a coveted passport stamp to mark the visit!

Exploring Chur with a Matterhorn Climber

Our next stop was Chur, Switzerland’s oldest city, where we were shown around by Felix, a former mountain climber who had conquered the iconic Matterhorn. Felix’s stories added a layer of adventure and history to the visit, making our time in Chur extra meaningful.

Reaching the Top of Europe – Jungfraujoch

No trip to Switzerland is complete without experiencing its awe-inspiring Alps, and we were no exception. In Lucerne, we boarded the famous train to Jungfraujoch, the highest train station in Europe. Reaching the top was a challenge for some of us, but the spectacular views of snow-capped peaks and glaciers made it all worth the effort!

Hidden Gems in the Fribourg Region

Our journey then took us to the Fribourg region, where we visited the charming villages of Avenches and Murten. These towns, where both Swiss German and French are spoken, offered a glimpse into Switzerland’s unique blend of cultures. We also had the chance to meet three local deaf people, who shared their experiences of life in Switzerland.

A Special Birthday in Geneva

In Geneva, we enjoyed a meal at a deaf-owned restaurant called Vroom, where the atmosphere was as warm and welcoming as the food was delicious. One of our group members even celebrated her birthday here, adding a personal and unforgettable touch to the day.

A Star-Studded Visit to the Charlie Chaplin Museum

Another highlight was the Charlie Chaplin Museum, where we were guided by Noha, a friendly local expert who took us on a journey through Chaplin’s life and career. This visit offered a deep dive into the world of one of cinema’s greatest legends, all while surrounded by Switzerland’s stunning scenery.

The Grand Finale: Zermatt and the Matterhorn

Our final stop was the iconic town of Zermatt, nestled at the foot of the world-famous Matterhorn. We couldn’t have asked for better weather—the skies were clear, giving us an uninterrupted view of this majestic mountain, something many travelers miss due to clouds. We took the Gornergratbahn, a scenic train that offered breathtaking views, and even embarked on a short hike. Though it was a bit tiring, the beauty of the Alps made every step rewarding.

Farewell in Zurich

Before we knew it, our Swiss adventure was drawing to a close. A brief visit to Zurich marked the end of our trip, but by this point, we were more than just fellow travelers—we had become a family. Each moment spent together, from the cities to the mountains, deepened our connections and left us all eager for the next adventure.
