What happens when a spirited group of students and faculty from Central Michigan University lands in France for ten days of culture, connection, and curiosity? A journey unfolds—full of discovery, Deaf history, language immersion, and unforgettable moments.

From our first day in Paris, climbing the winding streets of Montmartre to the Sacré-Cœur under a smiling summer sky, we knew this was more than sightseeing. We raised our first toast in a medieval tavern, marking the beginning of something special.

We immersed ourselves in French Sign Language (LSF) at the International Visual Theater and explored Paris through the eyes of Matt, our Deaf guide, who brought history to life with every step. At Sainte-Chapelle, the stained-glass glow left us speechless; at Versailles, we wandered royal halls and dreamy gardens.

Traveling south by train, we reached Lyon and then Louhans—a hidden gem where the French Deaf History Museum and the birthplace of Laurent Clerc deeply moved us. These quiet moments of connection and reflection grounded our experience.

Returning to Paris for a final whirlwind of landmarks and laughter, we found ourselves already nostalgic. The Louvre eluded us, but the memories did not.

On our last night, drifting beneath the glowing bridges of Paris, we realized we hadn’t just taken a trip—we’d lived a story. One written in shared glances, expressive hands, and open hearts. One we’ll carry for life. We can’t wait to welcome CMU back to France again next year!
